About Extract ZIP Files
Extract ZIP Files lists the contents of an archive first, then extracts only what you ask for: one file, everything as one ZIP, or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, everything into a folder with its structure. ZIP files go through zip.js, which also decodes file names from older tools; other archives go through 7-Zip 24.09 compiled to WebAssembly, which reads RAR and RAR5, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ZST, CAB, LZH, and the other formats 7-Zip supports. Password-protected and split archives work. Images, PDFs, text, audio, and video can be opened in a new tab.
How to open a ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive
- 1Drop the archive on the box or click it to choose the file; for a split archive, select all its parts together.
- 2If asked, type the password and click "Unlock".
- 3Read the list of files with their paths and sizes; nothing is extracted yet.
- 4Click "Download" or "Open" on a file, or use "Download all as ZIP" or "Save all to a folder".

Where your file is processed
The archive is read in pieces by a Web Worker in your browser, with 7-Zip (served from this site) and zip.js; it is not uploaded, and the password stays in this tab. If the archive cannot be opened, our error log receives the cleaned message, the archive's extension, a size range, and your browser name, never the archive or its name.
Frequently asked questions
Can it open password-protected archives?
Yes: ZIP with AES or the older ZipCrypto, RAR, and 7Z, including archives whose file names are encrypted. Type the password when asked and click "Unlock"; it is used only inside this tab, and a wrong one shows "Wrong password — try again".
Can it open a split (multipart) archive?
Yes. Select every part at once, for example name.part1.rar and name.part2.rar, name.7z.001 and name.7z.002, or name.z01, name.z02, and name.zip. The tool starts from the first part and reads the others; a missing part is reported.
Is there a size limit?
Yes, per extracted file: 1.9 GB on a computer and 300 MB on phones and tablets. Archives themselves have no cap, except compressed TAR files such as .tar.gz, whose inner .tar must be unpacked in memory first and has the same limit.
Can I extract just one file?
Yes. Click its "Download": only that file is extracted, so a large archive is not unpacked whole. "Open" shows images, PDFs, text, audio, and video in a new tab instead of saving them.
Are accented ZIP file names shown correctly?
Yes. zip.js reads names as UTF-8 when they are valid UTF-8, and otherwise as IBM code page 437, as the ZIP specification says, so names written by older tools come out right.
