About Number PDF Pages
Number PDF Pages writes a page number on the pages you choose. Pick a format (1, 1 / 12, Page 1, Page 1 of 12) or type your own text in which {n} becomes the number and {p} the last number used. Set the first number, the first and last page to number or skip the cover, one of six positions, the margin, the size and color, and facing pages for a printed book. Numbers are placed as the page is displayed, also on rotated pages, and characters the standard font cannot write are drawn as an image. Roman numerals are not offered. pdf-lib stamps the numbers inside your browser tab.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- 1Choose the PDF.
- 2Pick a position button and a format in "Number format".
- 3Optionally set "First number", "From page", "To page (empty = last)", "Margin", the font size slider, and "Color".
- 4Click "Add page numbers", then "Download" to save the -numbered.pdf file.

Where your file is processed
Numbers are drawn into your PDF by pdf-lib inside this browser tab, and the file is not uploaded. Text that the Helvetica font cannot write, such as Cyrillic, is rendered by your browser into a transparent picture and placed on the page instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering on page 2 with the number 1?
Yes. Check Skip the first page (cover): numbering then starts on page 2, and that page receives the First number, which is 1 by default. To keep the document's own count, so that page 2 shows 2, set First number to 2.
Is {p} the total number of pages?
No. {p} is the last number written, not the total number of pages in the file. If you number pages 3 to 10 starting at 1, {p} becomes 8, so Page {n} of {p} reads Page 1 of 8 on page 3.
Can numbers alternate sides like in a printed book?
Yes. Check Facing pages: on even numbers, a number set to the left moves to the right and the reverse. With a right-hand position, numbers then sit on the outer edge; center positions do not move.
Can I use Roman numerals?
No. Numbers are always written in digits. A custom text can add words around the number, such as Page {n} or Sheet {n} of {p}, but the number itself cannot be written as i, ii, iii.
Tips and tricks
