About TIFF to PNG
TIFF to PNG saves a TIFF image as a PNG, a lossless format that every browser displays, which Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on a computer cannot do with TIFF. Transparency in the TIFF is kept. For a multipage file, the page count is read as soon as the file is chosen, and a "Page" box picks the page to convert. The UTIF.js decoder reads 1 to 32-bit integer gray and RGB images, palette images, and 8-bit CMYK, which is turned into RGB. Files with more than 8 bits per channel are brought down to 8 bits, their darkest and brightest values stretched to black and white. The orientation tag is applied.
Example
A 16-bit grayscale TIFF of 4 pixels whose values use only the band from 1,290 to 1,681, as real elevation data can, and the gray levels of the PNG this page writes. Keeping only the high byte of each value, a plain 16-to-8-bit cut, would give 5, 5, 6, and 6: a black picture.
TIFF pixels (16-bit, 0 to 65,535)
1,290 1,420 1,550 1,681
PNG pixels (8-bit, 0 to 255)
0 85 170 255
How to convert TIFF to PNG
- 1Load the .tiff or .tif image into the upload area.
- 2If the file has several pages, their number is shown: type the page to convert in the "Page" box (page 1 by default).
- 3Click "Convert to PNG", or "Cancel" to stop.
- 4Click "Download" to get the PNG, named after the TIFF.
Formats and limits
- Input format
- TIFF (.tif, .tiff), one file
- Output format
- PNG, 8 bits per channel, transparency kept
- Refused
- Planar color storage, and CMYK at more than 8 bits per channel
- Time limit
- 20 seconds to decode, then the worker is stopped with a message
Common uses
- A scan for a web page or a document
- Scanners and office copiers often save .tif files, which Chrome, Edge, and Firefox do not display on a computer. As a PNG, an 8-bit scan keeps every pixel and opens in any browser and in most editors.
- A multipage fax
- Choose a 3-page fax TIFF and the page says it has 3 pages. Convert page 1, then type 2 in the "Page" box, convert again, and do the same for page 3: you get three separate PNG files.
- A logo with a transparent background
- A logo exported from a print layout as a TIFF with an alpha channel keeps its transparent background as a PNG, ready to place on a colored web page; a JPG would fill it with a solid color.
- A 16-bit scientific or elevation image
- A 16-bit TIFF from a microscope, a sensor, or an elevation model often uses a narrow band of values and looks black in ordinary viewers. Here its darkest and brightest values are stretched to black and white, so the PNG shows the picture.
Which tool to use
- TIFF to JPG: uses the same decoder and the same page choice, but writes a JPG, with a quality setting that starts at 90 and a color for transparent areas; pick it for lighter photo files, not to keep transparency.
- Image Converter: converts a batch of pictures, TIFF included, to PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, and five other formats, but reads only the first page of a multipage TIFF.
- Image to PDF: turns every page of a multipage TIFF into a page of one PDF, which keeps a fax or a scanned document together in a single file.
Where your file is processed
Decoding and PNG encoding take place in a worker thread of your own browser; the TIFF does not travel to any server. Should the conversion fail, we receive a log entry with the cleaned error wording, the file extension, its size range, the tool's name, and your browser's name and version, but never the image or its file name.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PNG an exact copy of the TIFF?
Yes for opaque 8-bit gray or RGB TIFFs: PNG compression is lossless. Partly transparent pixels can change slightly, more for nearly transparent ones; a 16-bit or other high-depth TIFF is reduced to 8 bits with its range stretched; CMYK becomes RGB; an embedded color profile is not applied.
Can I convert all pages of a multipage TIFF?
Yes, one at a time. The "Page" box appears as soon as a multipage file is chosen: type a page number, click "Convert to PNG", then type the next number and convert again. Each page is downloaded as its own PNG.
Does a TIFF with an alpha channel stay transparent?
Yes. A TIFF with an alpha channel gives a PNG with the same transparent areas; nothing is flattened onto a color, unlike TIFF to JPG.
Which TIFF compressions can it read?
UTIF.js decodes uncompressed, LZW, Deflate (ZIP), PackBits, JPEG, and CCITT Group 3 and Group 4 fax TIFFs. A few non-standard LZW files make the decoder stall: after 20 seconds the page stops it and suggests re-saving the file with Deflate or no compression.
Is there a file size limit?
No limit is set, but the whole TIFF is loaded into your browser's memory. In our measurements, a 23.5 MP, 17.5 MB uncompressed photo decoded in under one second; decoding gets 20 seconds, and writing the PNG then gets 8 seconds per megapixel, never less than 20 seconds.
Can I convert several TIFF files at once?
No, this page takes one file at a time. Image Converter accepts a batch of TIFF files and writes PNG among other formats, but it reads only the first page of each multipage TIFF.
Why is the PNG bigger than my TIFF?
A fax or a black-and-white scan stores 1 bit per pixel with fax compression, which is very compact, while the PNG uses 8 bits per channel, so it can come out larger. A color photo saved as an uncompressed TIFF usually gives a smaller PNG.
Tips and tricks
- ✓If the decoder stalls on a non-standard LZW TIFF, re-save the file with Deflate/ZIP compression or none, as the message suggests, and convert it again.
